A small first network

The official beginner advice suggests buses between nearby towns, or a simple cargo service such as vegetables or fish to a commercial district that wants them. Check the destination’s current demand before laying out the line.

A useful inspection order

  1. Name the job: who or what should this route deliver, and where?
  2. Inspect both ends. Check demand, access and the chosen vehicle’s compatibility.
  3. Watch a full round trip. Distinguish a loading queue from a road or railway queue.
  4. Read the line balance over a comparable period before adding vehicles.
  5. Change one thing, then observe again. Keep the improvement that resolves the constraint.

Build around the terrain

The manual recommends following contours to reduce earthworks and steep slopes. Terrain changes and tree removal can also harm reputation. When comparing two alignments, consider what they cost to build and what happens to the town, as well as the journey.

Fix the common early bottlenecks

What you seeWhat to inspect next
Purchased vehicle stays idleAssign it to a line; buying a vehicle does not give it a route.
Train loads slowlyCheck platform length against the complete train length.
Cargo transfer stopsInspect warehouse storage within the stations’ catchment.
Long line makes disappointing moneyCompare direct origin-to-destination distance with the route’s detour.
Town growth stallsCheck current cargo demand and town ratings before expanding supply.
Evidence note

These are inspection prompts from the manual, not a diagnosis for every save.

Three habits worth keeping

  • Save before an expensive rebuild, then compare the same service after the change.
  • Check new town demands when a successful delivery suddenly becomes insufficient.
  • Use the route checklist to record every transfer rather than relying on memory.

Find the right official wiki

Use the TF3 manual for TF3 rules and the TF2 manual for older campaign tasks. Select the game first; similar vehicle and mission names do not establish compatible instructions.
