Pick a first project

The official introduction covers repaints, new vehicles or assets, configuration changes and scripts. A repaint or a narrow configuration change is easier to isolate than a large gameplay overhaul. Follow the corresponding TF3 resource format rather than assuming TF2 files can be copied unchanged.

Keep the first iteration small

  1. Read Mod Definition and Resource Types in the official reference.
  2. Put the project in a separate mod directory rather than editing installed game files.
  3. For a vehicle, use the vehicle documentation and Model Editor; for terrain, use the terrain tools.
  4. Test the change on a separate map with its dependencies recorded.
  5. Read Publish a Mod before sharing; include purpose, compatibility and dependency information.

Check tools against the current patch

The 40420 notes include Model Editor vehicle-store image generation and mod-validator improvements. Stable 40423 (22 October) adds improved validation for aircraft metadata and fixes a crash caused by mods adding CSS files. If a validation problem comes from an older build, compare it after updating before redesigning the project.
